That was a close one! Despite going into the third period with a three goal lead, the Caps had to hang on towards the end as Buffalo came back with two goals in the third period! Despite that third period lapse, the Caps hung on and recorded a 3-2 win at MCI Center. The Caps are at New Jersey next.
I did a little investigation into Tuesday's early morning "attack" on my machine, and discovered that a total of 18 individual machines around the web were involved, including machines in Germany and here in the UK. I'm not too sure what to make of it, but I'd guess it was just script kiddies playing around.
I've come to that conclusion because even though port 2613 is a "well known port", it seems to me to be a very obscure port to try to gain access to. The port itself is something to do with the SMNTUBootstrap (what ever that is), but I can't find any information on it anywhere on the web.
Interestingly enough, port 2613 is mentioned in posts in the tw.bbs.comp.hacker newsgroup and in the alt.hackers.malicious newsgroup. I haven't had any repeat attacks since, so I guess Tuesday nights attack was just a one off - and my machine just happened to be the unlucky one in the firing line.
It was an excellent 4-1 victory for the Caps last night at MCI Center! See what happens when you play good defence? That excellent win gives the Caps a three-point breathing space at the top of the division over Tampa Bay, who face the Mighty Ducks tonight. The Caps face Buffalo on Wednesday night.
Hmm. My firewall is detecting a lot of inbound TCP and UDP connections, from various machines on the web, to port 2613 on my machine. I've just created a firewall rule to take care of it. I wonder what this is? I'll investigate further and let you know if I discover anything later on today...
My X-Files Season 2 DVD has been fixed! The repaired DVD arrived in the post this morning, and thanks to the excellent people at FUCD, it now plays like new and I won't have miss the episode that was unplayable due to the scratches! I'm very happy and thoroughly recommend FUCD to everyone!
The Caps face the Montreal Canadiens tonight at MCI Center, and I'm hoping the Caps can get back to winning ways. Tampa Bay got hammered 4-1 by the Buffalo Sabres last night, so the Caps are still one point ahead at the top of the southeast division. A win tonight would put the Caps three points ahead.
After a hard day at work, that started at 6am and finished at 3pm, I stayed up to listen in on the Caps game last night - I shouldn't have bothered - they were beaten 5-1 by the defending Stanley Cup champions at MCI Center. The Caps could drop to second in the southeast division if Tampa win today.
Back over this side of the pond, my beloved Aston Villa still can't seem to build up any decent away form (no goals in 13 out of 28 league games). They were beaten by Charlton 3-0 in a game where Villa rarely threatened to score. Still, at least we're above archrivals Birmingham in the league!
This quote from a Washington Post article says it all:
"If the Washington Capitals are to achieve their goal of winning the Southeast Division, they will have to resurrect a lagging offense and prove they can beat NHL's elite. Last night they had the opportunity to do both while hosting the Toronto Maple Leafs at MCI Center and failed to do either in a 6-2 defeat".
The Caps face last years Stanley Cup winners, Detroit, next...
I had been wondering why funds in my bank account had dropped so low, and today the answer came to me - this place hadn't given me my holiday pay for the two weeks I had off! No wonder I'm so broke at the moment. The problem has now been corrected, and I shall get the owed amount next Friday.
The Caps face the in form Toronto Maple Leafs (who have won eight of their last nine games) at MCI Center tonight. It will be a tough game, but it's one the Caps need to win as Tampa Bay won last night (they beat Atlanta 2-0), and are now only two points behind the Caps in the southeast division title race!
At this precise moment in time I am busy working to compile this months Anti-Spam Protection Files. It's a tedious and time-consuming process to say the least. In other news, my flashy new CV from CV Expert arrived today! I'm very happy with it indeed - an online version of my CV will follow shortly.
One of my X-Files Season 2 DVD's has mysteriously developed a few nasty scratches and refuses to play one episode correctly. So I've sent it off to FUCD today in the hope they can repair it for me - and I really hope that they can because I don't want to have to skip an episode if I can help it!
Disaster! Despite taking the lead in the second period, the Caps were beaten 3-1 last night by Tampa Bay Lightning. That cuts the Caps' lead at the top of the southeast division to only four points, and as I said yesterday, Tampa Bay have two games in hand - I'll be praying that they lose both.
It's another must win game for the Caps tonight as they face Tampa Bay Lightning in Florida. The Caps could go eight points clear at the top of the southeast division with a win tonight, but Tampa Bay have two games in hand, so the more points the Caps put between themselves and Tampa, the better.
As expected, it was a rough and physical game of Ice Hockey last night in Florida, but the Caps came out 2-1 winners! Tampa Bay won last night too, but the Caps still have a six-point lead at the top of the southeast division. And guess who the Caps play next on Monday night? You guessed it, Tampa Bay!
The Caps were beaten 3-1 by the Carolina Hurricanes last night, who hadn't won for seven straight games - not exactly a great way to follow up the 5-1 thrashing of Atlanta, is it? Tampa Bay Lightning managed to tie Atlanta 2-2 last night, so they've closed the gap to only six points.
Tonight, the Caps face the Florida Panthers, who are probably still upset over the 12-2 hammering the Caps gave them back at MCI Center a few weeks ago. I'm back at this place tomorrow morning after two weeks off, but I'll be staying up to listen in on what should be an excellent game!
Happy Valentines Day!
The Caps are up against the Carolina Hurricanes tonight in Raleigh, North Carolina. Can the Caps build on a seven-point southeast division lead? I'll be listening in...
There was a moment in the first period when I thought the Caps might slaughter the Thrashers by another double figured score, but it wasn't to be. Still, you can't be unhappy with five goals in the first period, can you? The final score from the Philips Arena was 5-1 to the Caps!
Woo! At last I have won the Stanley Cup with the Caps in my first NHL 2003 season! Speaking of the Caps, they're in action against the Atlanta Thrashers tonight at the Philips Arena in Atlanta, Georgia. I shall be listening in as always, hoping that the Caps thrash the Thrashers! Go Caps, Go!
The Caps were beaten 2-0 by the Montreal Canadiens last night at MCI Center. The Montreal goalie played superbly all game, making a total of 25 saves to record a shutout. In other news, the amount of subscribers to my Anti-Spam Updates service has tripled in the space of two days!
After beating the New York Islanders 3-0 on Friday, the Caps face the Montreal Canadiens at MCI Center tonight, hoping to extend their lead at the top of the southeast division to seven points with a win. Back over this side of the pond, after a great run of results, Villa were beaten 2-1 by Fulham yesterday.
GazNET Anti-Spam Updates went online yesterday - and a few people have already signed up! I reckon this new service of mine could grow to be quite popular. Of course, there is a danger that it could grow to be too popular, but I'll deal with that if, and when, it becomes a problem.
I have 600 worth of shares in this place that I'd (oops!) completely forgotten about! The question running around my head at the moment is - what I should I do with them? Should I sell them and receive the gain in cash? Or should I wait to see if they increase a little more? Decisions, decisions...
I'm currently on holiday from this place at the moment - just another week to go and then it's back to it again - and I really don't want to! I know I keep going on about adware and spyware, but I really do hate it - and this article just goes to show that it gets absolutely everywhere!
At last, after months and months of waiting it was finally time to dress up in my cap and gown, and collect my hard earned Computing degree in a rather grand awards ceremony at Birmingham's Symphony Hall. It was great seeing a few old friends again, and it was an enjoyable day overall.
It was pretty tight for most of the game, but the Caps were beaten 4-1 by the New Jersey Devils. The Caps' next game is against the New York Islanders at MCI Center on Friday. In other news, I get to wear a cap and gown tomorrow, as I'll be collecting my degree from this place at the awards ceremony!
Yeah! What an excellent result for the Caps last night! They destroyed Tampa Bay Lightning 5-1, with star man Jaromir Jagr scoring a hat trick, and also netting his 500th career goal! The Caps now have a big five-point lead at the top of the southeast division. They face New Jersey at home tonight. Go Caps!
The Caps face Tampa Bay Lightning at St. Pete Times Forum tonight - it's an absolutely massive game for both teams. The Caps, who are three points clear of the Lightning, could extend their lead to five points with a win. And Tampa really needs to win to cut the Caps' lead to just one point.
Don't forget to check out the new Caps website - it gets launched tonight at 7pm EST (that's midnight UK time). I'm sure it will be an excellent website worthy of the best team in the NHL. Let's just hope the Caps can celebrate the new website by notching up a win in Tampa!
Wow! What a game! After three excellent periods of Ice Hockey, the All Star Game ended with a 5-5 tie. After an explosive overtime period, with the scores still tied at 5-5, the game went into a shootout, where the Western All Stars beat the Eastern All Stars 3-1 to win the game.
Today sees the NHL All Star Game take place in Florida! It's the East against the West. Last night, the Young Stars Game was played - and the East beat the West 8-3 - with the Caps' young player, Brian Sutherby scoring two goals plus an assist to take home the game's most valuable player award.
Tonight I shall be supporting the East - and there are two Caps players in the Eastern team - Jaromir Jagr and Sergei Gonchar. Will it be a wide-open affair like the Young Stars Game? Or will it be a close run game with one team winning by a goal or two? I'm so looking forward to this game - go Eastern All Stars!
The US space shuttle Columbia has broken up soon after re-entering the Earth's atmosphere and all seven crew aboard are presumed dead. The story is all over the news and it's without a doubt the biggest and saddest story of the day - what a terrible way to begin the month of February...
