Despite some hairy moments during the game yesterday, Villa ran out easy winners against Port Vale in their FA Cup game, beating them 3-1. Meanwhile over the other side of the pond the Caps lost 3-2 to the Boston Bruins on Thursday night. They face off against the Tampa Bay Lightning at home later on this evening.

I knew it. I just knew it. No sooner had I mentioned that the Caps were on 4-game winning streak they went and lost 3-2 to the Boston Bruins at home on Monday night, putting an end to it. And last nights horrendous 8-1 loss to Pittsburgh... no comment. The Caps now venture north to play the Boston Bruins on Friday night.

With a 5-4 shootout victory against St. Louis, and a resounding 5-2 victory against Carolina - one of the top teams in the NHL - the Caps now own a 4-game winning streak! That win last night ended Carolina's 9-game winning streak. The Capitals are at home once again for Monday nights game against the Boston Bruins.

After last weekends disappointing home loss to West Ham, Villa went to Tottenham looking for at least a point - and they got it. Despite being battered by Tottenham for most of the 0-0 game, Villa managed to escape with a point - a very, very good result in my opinion. Up next for Villa: Port Vale in the FA Cup on Saturday.

Has it really been eleven days since I last posted anything? Sorry about that. I have been occupied with other things, like reading The Closers - the excellent new Harry Bosch novel from Michael Connelly. All of Michael's novels are superb, and this one is no exception. Absolutely scintillating. As always, highly recommended.

After a good first half against West Ham on Saturday, Villa went back to their old ways again. They were leading 1-0 going in at half-time, but for some mysterious reason they came out flat in the second half, and never really recovered once West Ham equalised. They lost 2-1 in the end. Up next for Villa: Tottenham.

As for the Caps, the past eleven days have seen them lose 4-3 in a shootout to Florida, 4-3 to Chicago and 4-1 to Dallas before beating the Mighty Ducks 3-2 (with the help of an Ovechkin hat trick) and slaughtering Phoenix 6-1. All but one of those were road games. The Caps are back home against St. Louis tomorrow night.

Villa have had a superb run of results of late. They drew 3-3 away at Fulham, held Arsenal 0-0 at home on New Years Eve (but should have won), beat West Brom away 2-1 and today today they beat Hull 1-0 away to make it through to the next round of the FA Cup. Villa play West Ham United at home next Saturday.

The Caps on the other hand have been in poor form of late. They beat the Flyers in a shootout 4-3 on New Years Eve, lost 5-2 at home to Atlanta on New Years Day, lost 3-1 at home to the Senators, and last night they lost by the same score 3-1 to the Flyers. They play Chicago next at home on Tuesday evening.
